Do you think Apple’s iPad will kill Amazon’s Kindle and why?

Wednesday Feb 17, 2010

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled a new touchscreen tablet computer on Wednesday dubbed the "iPad," seeking to carve out a niche between the laptop and the smartphone.

Apple said it would start shipping the iPad, which features a virtual touchscreen keyboard, within 60 days, making them available worldwide in late March. Jobs, who appeared thin but healthy, said Apple was launching an online "iBookstore" for the iPad and touted its abilities as an electronic reader of books, newspapers and magazines.

Some technology analysts expect the iPad to pose a challenge to other e-readers on the market and Jobs made a reference to the e-reader market leader, Amazon’s Kindle.

Do you think Apple’s iPad will kill Amazon’s Kindle and why?

No. The ability to read ebooks on an lcd screen has been around before the Kindle or any other e-reader was available so why should the iPad change anything??

I have an Ipod Touch and I have an Amazon Kindle. Reading on an e-ink screen is much easier on the eyes and that makes a big difference if you like to read a lot. I get a headache reading on an LCD screen and I get tired a lot faster.

Also the Ipad will cost twice as much, and as far as functionality goes, a netbook is half the price and twice as functional. I also own a netbook, and that hasn’t replaced my Kindle.

However, if you must have a tablet to keep up with the Joneses, I would wait until the HP slate has to offer, that will run Windows 7 which is far more functional than the ipod/ipad platform and you would be able to read Kindle books on it. Amazon probably has the best prices and best selection of ebooks right now.

Are job applications extinct(maybe)?

Monday Feb 15, 2010

Well, I’m trying to help my cousins get a job as a bagger at Safeway or Bell Markets but all I see in the store are computers where you can apply. I don’t really feel like asking the clerk because MOST of them are grouchy and have negative attitudes when being asked about a job like we are going to steal it from them. But anyways, other places I noticed that indicates you should apply online are Old Navy, Make-up boutiques, and movie theatres. Even though I see a sign that posts, "Apply online"…should I just call and ask a manager and see if it is possible to apply in person? Not all people have access to the internet! We are living in a world of illegal immigrants nowadays…we got to be stingy when it comes to expenses.
thanks for the useless advice*sarcastic*

Well yes, as someone who has applied to lots of part-time jobs, paper applications are becoming extinct. Most of the big chain stores, like Old Navy, Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. are requesting that you apply online. The smaller stores, however, mostly use paper applications. However, bigger chain stores use both online, computer, and paper applications. As a former employee of one of them, I can tell you that my manager never looked at the paper applications and only looked at the ones online or on the computer because he claimed that it was faster to find someone that way.

You don’t have to have the internet to apply to these places. Just fill out a paper application or use the computer they have there. And if you want to call the manager, you should first hand in a paper application. Wait one week and ask them if they received your application. This will indicate to them that you are driven and might prompt them to ask you for an interview.

Running a Successful Home-Based Business?

Saturday Feb 13, 2010

Wanting advice about starting a possible online, home-based business. Currently a 3rd shift, part-time college student and wanting to explore this possiblity. Skills include excellent typing skills (80+wpm), desktop publishing skills (can easily create professional brochures, memos, pamplets, banners, etc), data entry, basic accounting, and web design (with Microsoft FrontPage). I’m sure this market is over-loaded with other business, but I would still like to see if I could be successful. I have most, if not all, of the required software/equipment such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Package Suite, scanners, internet, digital camera, etc.. My question(s) include: How would I successfully run and advertise my business? How and what services should I list that I can perform? How would I know what to charge compared to other "online" businesses? What legalities/liabilities should I be aware of? I’m limiting my investment to $0-$100. Thanks.
I would want to do this business part-time, but at least 30-35 hours a week. I can devote about 2-3 hours per day (Monday – Thursday), but then work all day long on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. I have always had a love of doing these types of jobs for friends, family, and organizations that I am affiliated with, but would like to be able to earn an income if I could be successful.
I am not wanting anyone to answer with their own advertisment of web sites to "make money" or any SPAM! I will report you if you answer in this manner. I want advice or suggestions, not spam. If I wanted SPAM I would do a search and find it myself.

If you are an accomplished typist – word processor and have recently visited your local city college or university librarian, you can apply as a "certified" graduate typist, earning between $1.50 to $2.00 per page for a master or doctoral thesis. The librarian will provide you with a sample of the typing template (i.e., margin settings, font selection, page set up, etc.) in order to complete these projects. An average weekend income is about $300-$400 for two days work.

Good luck!

As a Mac user I am excited that Mac users will not have to wait the usual 6-9 months after everyone else (PC users) has the game and is talking about it. As a Sims fan, I hate to wait!
